Syria’s new President, Ahmed Al-Shara, cannot erase his past. Under a different alias, he was a Jihadi terrorist, joining the fight against the United States and the West after 911 and celebrating Al-Qaeda’s crime against the free world. These days he goes out of his way to play the Statesman, but the onus remains on him to convince the world that he and his henchmen have undergone a complete transformation. The lingering suspicion is that once firmly established in power, his true character will be unveiled from under the diplomatic suits and ties.
